Cain Schulte Gallery (formerly MMGalleries) is pleased to announce Translucent: Contemporary Works in Wax, a juried exhibition of encaustic works in collaboration with the International Encaustics Artists (IEA) association.  The exhibition opens July 11 and runs through August 16, 2008.

Translucent: Contemporary Works in Wax is Cain Schulte Gallery‘s second collaboration with IEA.  The exhibition will include works from encaustic artists from across the United States, selected by a 3-person panel of curators, and will feature a range of works from abstract to figurative, that tackle innovative approaches to uses of color, texture, surface, pattern, and the dichotomy of hot and cold.

Subtle and engaging, encaustic is a cutting-edge medium, though it is millenniums old.  Consisting of beeswax, tree resin, and pigments melted together on a heated palette, it is often applied in layers onto a wooden panel.  The layering effect and flexibility of the medium though allow for endless possibilities of expression, including but not limited to sculpture, photography, paper, and mixed media.  The show at Cain Schulte Gallery will showcase the manifold ways encaustic has been used in recent years.
